I FOUND MY VALENTINE!

At 11, Sasha Bennington is too young to remember the days when Jordan was just a country and being branded 'fake' was something to be ashamed of. But maybe the youngster's biggest tragedy is that her mother, Jayne, 31, is in no hurry to paint a picture of how it used to be. All about the look: Sasha Bennington is just 11 but her mother loves the way she looks. Still, times have changed. All girls their age are.

The girls are encouraged to put on masses of make-up. It was just like a big theatrical event, like being transported to another world. I wasn't there to have the dress I wanted. I was there so that Sasha could win.

I was amazed at how much there was to learn, but I knew I was in the hands of the experts.

theme interesting, will

It seems that the main lesson learned was that her darling daughter could look like a plastic Barbie, and be rewarded with a sash to prove it. I watched them on the catwalk, with their arms held so precisely, walking slowly and turning just so.

not so

They reminded me of little ballerina dolls. What sort of mother wants her daughter to look like a doll? The image I have in my head is of Exorcist Barbie, but Jayne sees something else entirely.

I'd love to have those sort of pictures, nice pictures, rather than ones you hide away because you can't bear to look at them. It was about the same time she started dabbling in beauty pageants that Jayne declared she wanted her daughter to be the next Jordan.

thanks for explanation

She still does. Jordan is her idol and I fully support her in that. She's a great role model, this really down-to-earth woman who has made a big success of her life. Jayne always saw the public parading of Sasha as crucial to this goal, so maybe it's not surprising that she pushed the child Stateside, into a world few in Britain understand.

She chatters away about Sasha's media 'career', believing her daughter is a bona fide celebrity, and is proud to have been instrumental in making that happen. Going to the States was just the next stage in all of this, and it's been worthwhile. I want Sasha to have all the options.

In the forthcoming documentary, Jayne takes Sasha to a major agency, in the hope that she will be signed up.

The model booker says a vehement 'no', horrified by her portfolio, and tells Jayne that clients want their child models to look like children, and that for this sort of career success she would have to stop bleaching Sasha's hair and encouraging her to wear plastic nails.

Jayne refuses to comply. It comes as no surprise that Jayne used to be a model herself, and one who worked in the '- danydusausoit.com' side of the business. One of her own happiest memories is of entering a beauty pageant and winning the coveted sash. One day I was an ordinary clerical worker, the next everyone was looking at me. It was wonderful. Who knows what would have happened if I'd started earlier? Is it a coincidence that Jayne would have been working as a promotional model when Jordan came along and changed all the rules about how restrictive such a career can be.

She boasts she has met the pneumatic queen of the - danydusausoit.com world, and was even photographed with her. They were both products of their time. As she watched Jordan achieve extraordinary mainstream success, Jayne tried to forge her own path in the new world, where everything crass and ostentatious was celebrated rather than shunned.

She set up a limo hire business, and tried to get a foothold in the reality TV world, appearing on Wife Swap. Who knows? If something comes up. I'm not past it yet. She maintains it has always been Sasha who has driven her own 'career' forward. Even as a baby she was a 'total poser', playing up for the cameras and basking in the attention. I'm just helping her do what she wants, like any good parent would. It's not pushing her into anything.

I hate it when people say I'm a pushy parent. Her own father's lifelong obsession with death, culminating in his suicide, seems to be a harbinger of Mann's own preoccupation with death and dead bodies.

Her mother's lifelong distance and aloofness was offset by her relationship with the Black housekeeper. Sally Mann is one of the most interesting and creative personalities of the last century, in my opinion, stubbornly carrying out whatever odd and difficult project she conceives of. Her view of herself and her life is fierce, honest, and uncompromising.

She never flinches from showing herself as she is, and never hides her failures and insecurities from us.

This is more than a memoir of a photographer. In many ways, it is the story of the South. I've never understood this part of the Country until seeing inside of her mind through her memories, which she rigorously confirmed with her family, friends, and various documents she researched. It wasn't enough that she "remembered".

She made sure that what she remembered was what really happened. Oddly enough, for an artist who has been called the preeminent photographer of her generation, her undergraduate and Masters degrees are in creative writing. Her book is brilliantly written.

seems me, you

There is not a single dry sentence in it. Reading this book was one of the highlights of my reading year, and it will surely be one of yours. I just finished the third reading of Sally Mann's "Hold Still. This book is not a simple autobiography or, as it mentions in the cover, "A memoir with Photographs"; This book is one more piece in the immense work of Sally Mann and, as such, has constructed it with its accustomed meticulousness and honesty.

I FOUND MY VALENTINE!

Sally tells us her life, with details, but the purpose is no other than that we understand that every fact, every meeting, every look is building the floor on which we founded our work, which we decide to be or that we Is inevitable. The story of his Gee-Gee babysitter, the embarrassment of his in-laws, the mystery of his father, the "great" Larry Mann and his farm, his territory, that "Not only is abundant, with the kind of obvious beauty, Every day, that even a baby can appreciate, but also features the world-class drama of Virginia "; Everything is relevant, but not because it accumulates in his DNA, as a journalist insidiously insisted in a recent interview, but because Sally's gaze makes it relevant, analyzes, scrutinizes, integrates.

Reading the book generates the same feeling of hearing her speak, especially in the documentary "What remains", we recognize the lucid artist, who selects with wisdom and quickly discards. But what the book can show us, and which largely escapes orality, is the critical ability that Sally has, culturally critical, and the clarity of concepts.

Not many artists have, like her, the ability to articulate their concepts in clear language. The book touches fundamental themes of our human condition, such as death, love, beauty and racism. In the latter, racism reaches the bone when it tells us in a chapter on his project of portraying black men: "Exploitation lies at the root of every great portrait, and we all know it.

See all reviews from the United States. Top international reviews. Verified Purchase. A wonderful collection of memories, anecdotes, advice and lessons threaded in a gentle narrative illustrated with early images and ephemera.

I did not know, for example that she and her husband struggled financially for the first couple of decades of their marriage and that in itself should give hope and confidence to the struggling artist. It also dispels neatly the "superstar-from nowhere" myth that prevails in art and celebrity domain. Mann generously allows the reader to delve into the path of her success and recognition and life.

A rare and enticing glimpse, I'm just sorry i waited so long to buy it. This book and Geoff Dyer's "Ongoing moment" are two of my favourite, least verbose, least "intellectual-for-the-sake-of-it" photography texts.

Buy it and enjoy. If you're looking for technical or "how-to" information this is not the book to buy. I've always thought that the "why" of an image was far more important than the "how". Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again. Wonderful book. Amazingly well written. Less poetic than her visual art.

thanks for

A more realistic and investigate approach to communicating her views. Great stories about Mann's ancestors, her immediate family and people she has met throughout her life. She brings up relevant questions about roots, place, cts of how do we become who we become? Inspiring in many many ways. It evokes in me a longing for the South. I have lived in Ny and in California for 20 years and are now back in Europe, where the mystery is less and the human, racial, generational drama so different.

She makes me want to travel the South and write about my own ancestry and mixing with my pictures taken through the last 40 years. Whatever this genre is called? One person found this helpful.

I love this book, a very personal account of her experiences and I like the defiance she portrays it's a good two fingers up at critics who's opinions are based on their influences not their experiences. It's a really easy read full of romanticism, poetry and stories that have shaped this artist to become the person she is today. A truly classic book. This has been a pleasure to read throughout.
